What types of research can Ethiclear review?
Ethiclear reviews human participant research that falls outside the NHS REC remit. This includes non-CTIMP studies, nutritional and dietary research, observational and real-world evidence studies, consumer research, wearable technology trials, and research conducted by commercial sponsors, charities, and independent organisations.
Can Ethiclear review NHS research or CTIMP trials?
No. Ethiclear is designed for research outside the NHS framework. Studies involving investigational medicinal products (CTIMPs) or studies that require NHS REC review are outside our remit. If you are unsure whether your study requires NHS REC review, contact us and we will advise accordingly.
How long does the review process take?
From receipt of a complete application, you can typically expect a decision within approximately one month. We provide defined timelines at each stage of the process so you can plan with confidence.
How much does it cost?
The initial review fee is
£150 + VAT, payable on submission. The full committee review fee is
£1,500–£2,000 + VAT, depending on study complexity. There are no hidden charges. Discretionary discounts may be available for charities and non-profit organisations. See our
pricing page for full details.
Can I save my application and return to it later?
No — the online application must be completed in a single session. We recommend downloading and completing all required documents before starting the online form. If you need guidance, contact us at
hello@ethiclear.com before you begin.
How do you manage conflicts of interest?
All committee members declare conflicts of interest at the application review stage. Any member with a relevant conflict is excluded from the review of that application. This process is central to our commitment to impartiality and is documented as part of every review.
